Eco-Squad

The Eco-Squad 2024-2025

Our aim is to empower the children of Fairview to work towards a more sustainable lifestyle and to help mould them into responsible global citizens. What young people learn today will influence how future generations live.

Our intent is to nurture knowledge, creativity, kindness, wisdom and many more skills that will allow our children to develop and flourish, as well as help to provide a better environmental future.

As a school, we believe we play a vital role in developing awareness and passion for the importance of our environment. It is crucial to educate our children to become independent in the knowledge of what and how things can be recycled, how to be less wasteful and how to develop an environment that is ‘nature-friendly’.

Fairview’s Eco-Squad focusses on modelling this philosophy, undertaking roles that make a difference and encouraging their peers to follow a positive, environmentally responsible attitude.

What do the Eco-Squad do?

Saving Electricity Posters

The Eco-Squad have started bringing in their ’Save Electricity’ posters. A great start (bold with a clear message). These will be displayed around the school.

Litter Picking

Eco-Squad (Hawks) carry out their litter-picking duties at lunchtime. The children take it in turns to take the equipment and ensure our school grounds are litter-free.

Litter Picking - Wigmore Park

The Eco-Squad visited Wigmore Park and worked well together, collecting litter. #Eco-Squad

Maintaining the Eco Garden

The Eco-Squad (KS1) have now finished setting up the outdoor containers, ready for planting. The aim is to get the seeds in the soil by the end of the term! While we were there, we also topped up all the bird feeders and had a look in the pond. Some of the Eco-Squad also cleared some of the pond weed - it was messy!

Recycling Initiatives

The KS1 Eco-Squad children collected their plastic bottle recycling boxes today. They will be reminding everyone in school to make sure they are recycling their plastic bottles into their boxes.

Recycling Pens and Glue Sticks

The Eco-Squad worked together, filling boxes with used pens and glue sticks, ready to be sent away for re-cycling. #Eco-Squad

Stopping Idling Engines Outside Our School

Eco-Squad members from Year 5 and 6 have learnt about how idling vehicles contribute to air pollution. They have been set a task to create posters encouraging vehicle owners to switch off their engines when parked outside of school.

Spring Planting

Now it’s Spring, things in the Eco-World are about to liven up. The focus for the next two weeks will be planting seeds/potatoes. Here are a few pictures from around the school, showing how previous planting sessions have made a real impact! Note, the focus has been on ’insect friendly’ planting.

Eco-Squad Harvesting

Year 3 Eco-Squad Reps (plus friends) harvested part of the potato crop that we planted earlier in the year. They also noticed one of the donated bird boxes (attached to a wall) was occupied. Investigations have shown that the new homeowners are Great Tits. Excellent! #Eco-Squad.
